Jewish Museum

The "New Berlin" is a playground for International architects. One of the most talked about last year was Daniel Liebeskind. His spectacular Jewish Museum opened in January 1999. The building is unlike anything I've ever seen. The link above takes you to more pictures of the building that is located at Lindenstraße 9-14, 10969 Berlin. The museum hasn't opened yet, as the concept of its exhibition is still under discussion.

To learn more about the Jewish community in Berlin (dating back to 1295 A.C. and currently the fastest growing world wide) visit Jews in Berlin?

[American C-47 planes lining up for takeoff during Berlin air-lift]Berlin Airlift Veteran's Association (in English)

In 1948, three years after the end of World War II, Germany's capital Berlin was cut off from the outside world by a Russian blockade. In an unprecedented effort, Berlin was supplied over the air for 462 days.

During that time the men and women assigned to the airlift conducted over 250,000 flights that delivered more then 2 million tons of food and supplies to Berliners. Also history making were the flights of Gail Halvorson, who had the idea to drop sweets out of the air for the Berliner children. Americans organized for 23 tons of candy to be dropped and Halvorson recently conducted a similar effort in Bosnia. The picture shows planes taking off to Berlin. At times they were taking off at the rate of one plane/minute. Without this ingenious and heroic effort, Berlin would not have survived that year. The original members off the airlift have put together a Web page with history, photographs and personal accounts.

Castle Schönbrunn in Vienna - new URL
                                  (in English,  German, Italian)

The former home to the Habsburg Dynasty, this is one of the important castles in the German speaking countries. It was here Mozart gave his first concert in 1762. Hundred years later the castle was home to Emperor Franz Josef I and Empress Elisabeth, also called "Sissi". Online you can tour the castles rooms and gardens and browse the castle's store.

Elisabeth was a well traveled and well educated woman who did not believe monarchy had much of a future. Starting in 1955 the trilogy of "Sissi" movies launched the international film career of the then 16 year old Romy Schneider.

The Sancoussi Castle is definitely one of my favorite spots just outside Berlin. Built by Prussia's King Frederic the Great in 1745, the castle is situated on generous grounds, replete with a Chinese Tea House, artificial ruins, lakes, Italianate villas, Roman baths and what not.

Many of the buildings have undergone restoration since Germany's reunification. It's a lovely place to spend a quiet summer day since due to the park's size the tourist crowd spreads out quite a bit.

[Picture of a postcard] Historic Postcard Collection (in English)

Lars-Olov Stenborg from Sweden is one of the postcard collectors who shows some of his treasures on the Web. The collection is international, including several postcards from the U.S. and, of course, Sweden. A beautiful site to visit! Of particular interest in connection with this German page is this postcard from Berlin that shows a tram accident in 1908.
