Selim Mimaroglu and Stephen Revilak Win Randall Malbone Scholarship Award

The department is pleased to announce this year's Randall Malbone Scholarship award
winners: Selim Mimaroglu and Stephen Revilak.
Selim Mimaroglu is a doctorate candidate in the Department of Computer
Science. His research interests are clustering, text mining, and sequence
mining. Selim received an M.S. degree in Computer Science in 2003 from UMass
Boston, and a B.S. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 2000
from Hacettepe University, Turkey.
Selim Mimaroglu received awards for outstanding achievement in Computer
Science in May 2003 and May 2007 from UMass Boston and an award of
excellence from the US Federal Government in May, 2003. He was selected as a
community leader by Sleepycat Software (now Oracle) in January, 2006.
Steve Revilak is a Ph.D. Candidate in Computer Science, doing applied
database research with advisor Patrick O'Neil. Steve received an MS in
Computer Science from UMass Boston, a Major Certificate in Computer Science
from UMass Boston, and a BM in Music Production and Engineering from Berklee
College of Music. Steve develops software for Kayak Software Corporation
and lives in Arlingon, MA.
The Randall Malbone Scholarship Award was established in 1998 and is named
for Randy Malbone, a talented student who earned both his Bachelors and
Masters Degrees in Computer Science at UMass Boston. Randy's Masters Degree
was awarded posthumously; Randy died just before graduation in 1997 at age
38. To help us remember Randy, his parents have endowed this fellowship in
his memory.
