Common Sense

Here is a link to the latest full draft of Common Sense, a new text for Math114Q (Quantitative Reasoning) at UMass Boston.

Here is the production version for the spring 2012 semester.

In principle, reading either of these pdfs on line while connected to the internet gives you access to the spreadsheets in the later chapters. In practice that sometimes fails. When it does, you can probably find what you need (along with other stuff you don't) at the chapter links that follow.

You can also find the production versions of text and spreadsheets at quantitativereasoning.net. There you will find a blog for instructors and a chat room for students

There is a (rudimentary) instructor's manual. Here is the version for the latest production version text. Here is the current version, matching the current version of the text.

  1. Income Distribution
  2. Electricity Bills
  3. The Tower of Pisa
  4. Simple and Compound Interest
  5. Paying Off a Debt
  6. Probability
  7. Break the Bank
  8. How Good is that Test?

You are free to use this draft and send us comments (please) but do not copy or distribute it. If you want to make copies for your students, just ask us for permission.

The development of Common Sense is supported in part
by National Science Foundation grant DUE-0942186.
