Helping people communicate |
|
About the project Sound2Sight is a project dedicated to aiding the hearing impaired in being able
to more easily communicate with others. Many people do not know how to speak in sign
language, and so hearing impaired people are left with lip reading as their only
conversational aid. When the person whom they are talking to is very articulate, with
easily read lips, this works just fine, but when their lips hardly move, along comes Sound2Sight.
Sound2Sight seeks to produce software which will run on a hand held computer. As the hearing
impaired person is watching their friend's lips, if they miss words, they should easily be
able to take a quick glance at the device where Sound2Sight has been busy transcribing the
person's voice to the screen. This will help to keep people conversing as close to seamlessly
as possible. It is our hope that this project will help change the way that the hearing
impaired interact with their world, and in this way, improve their quality of life.
We are excited to be the second tier research team working on this far reaching system and
look forward to seeing its future impact on the world around us.
