Fixing Problems with Unix Accounts
The Apply Process
- To get a Unix account you need to complete the Apply Process
- This will also give you your own directory inside the class
directory
- You will find instructions for doing this here
Login Failure
- If you entry the wrong login password 5 times you will be locked out
- This will only last for 2 hours
- After 2 hours you will be able to login again
- If you continue to be locked out, contact the operators at
operator@cs.umb.edu
Disk Quotas
- Along with a Unix account you get a home directory
- You cannot store more than 1 GB of data in you home directory
- You should only store there files you need for your coursework
- To see how much space you are using run the following
du -sh ~
- Sometimes student exceed their disk quota due to a large .cache directory in
you home directory
- To see the size of your .cache directory run
du -sh ~/.cache

Password Problems
- If you forgot or misremembered you password, you can change it
- Go to
https://portal.cs.umb.edu/password/
- On the left hand side of the screen you will see "Change Password"
- Enter the new password twice and click on the "Change Password"
button
- If this does not work contact the operators at
operator@cs.umb.edu
Unix Lab
- The CS Operators are the only people who can fix problems with your Unix account
- If you have problem with your account, send them an email at
operator@cs.umb.edu
- You must do this from your UMB email account
- The Operators' office is located in the Unix Lab
- The new Unix lab is on the 3rd floor of McCormack, M-3-731
- To get to the Unix Lab
- Go to the 3rd Floor of McCormack
- Turn around to face the rear of the building
- Walk all the way to the end of the hallway
- Pass through the green doors
- Turn right
- Take your first left down a small ramp
- Turn right and walk down the corridor
- The Unix Lab is the last door on the right
