Srini's Debian Notes

[Q1] How to install a perfect Debian system?
[Ans] Go to http://www.projektfarm.com/en/support/debian_setup/

[Q2] How to setup email using exim?
[Ans] Coming soon...

[Q3] How to install Squirrelmail(Web based email)?
[Ans] Your machine should have an MTA like Exim, Postfix or Sendmail for this. It also should have pop and imap support. As this is a php based web based application, you obviously need Apache with php. Debian comes with exim by default. If you have it configured correctly, you can send and recieve email instantly. For pop and imap, I installed ipopd and uw-imapd.

   apt-get install ipopd uw-imapd
   apt-get install squirrelmail

If you dont have php installed, apt-get takes care of the it or any other dependencies it needs.

[Q4] How to install Mailman(mailing list manager)?
[Ans] Go to my MailMan docs for details.

[Q5] How to Setup your X on your linux box?
[Ans] If you are having trouble configuring X to work on your linux box, the best and easiest way would be to autoconfigure, and then edit the XF86Config-4 file yourself. First step is to run the command XFree86 -configure to generate the XF86Config file. To check the file, run XFree86 -xf86config /path/to/XF86Config-file

Will be back with a more detailed howto soon..

[Q6] How to install kde3 on Debian Stable?
[Ans] The best and easiest way to install the latest version of kde would be to point the sources.list file to the latest URI, do a `apt-get update` and then execute `apt-get install arts kdelibs kdebase kdegraphics kdeadmin kdemultimedia`.

To install KDE 3.1.4, add "deb http://download.kde.org/stable/3.1.4/Debian stable main" to your sources.list file. To know about the latest version available, go to http://www.kde.org/download/.

[Q7] How to setup forums using phpBB?
[Ans] Coming soon...

[Q8] How to setup ApacheMP3?
[Ans] Go to http://www.apachemp3.com/

[Q9] How to setup basic authentication using apache mod_auth?
[Ans] Go to http://www.apacheweek.com/features/userauth or http://www.cs.umb.edu/~rickm/userauth.html

[Q10] How to setup your own photo gallery?
[Ans] Go to http://gallery.menalto.com/index.php. All requirements and howtos are detailed on this site.

[Q11] How to setup colors in your shell and prompt?
[Ans] I only know how to do this on the bash shell. To get colors in your shell, put the following in bold in your .bashrc.
eval `dircolors -b`
alias d="ls --color"
alias ls="ls --color=auto"
alias ll="ls --color -l"

To change the colors in your prompt, go to http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-tip-prompt/. For the ultimate guide for bash prompt tricks goto http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Bash-Prompt-HOWTO/.
To get what I have for my prompt, set PS1="\e[36m\u@\h: \W \$ \e[32m" in your .bashrc file.

[Q12] How to install pine on your debian box?
[Ans] You can install pine two ways.. One way is to point your sources.list file under /etc/apt/ to the right URI source, do a `apt-get update` and then do a `apt-get install pine`. You can find the right source from http://www.apt-get.org.

The second way is to build pine from sources directly. Do a `apt-get install pine-tracker`. Now under /usr/share/doc/pine-tracker/README you can read the details on how to build it. In short, create a temporary directory and work under it. First do a `apt-get --only-source build-dep pine` and then do a apt-get --only-source -b source pine. This will create a deb file. Then use dpkg -i to install the generated debian packages.

[Q13] How to set your wheel mouse on your linux box?
[Ans] Edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4's pointer section to look like this:

         Section "InputDevice"
            Identifier "Mouse1"
            Driver "mouse"
            Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
            Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
            Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
         EndSection-----------------------------

[Q14] How to get the latest versions of openoffice, mozilla and debian kernels?
[Ans] Add this to ur sources.list:

     deb http://www.backports.org/debian stable all

Do a apt-get update. You can then use apt-cache search to search for a package, then do a apt-get install to install it.

[Q15] How to use the Debian APT system?
[Ans] Go to part1.html and part2.html for details.

[Q16] How to setup Mysql and phpMyAdmin?
[Ans] Coming soon...

[Q17] How to do Virtual Hosting with Apache on your Debian box?
[Ans] Coming soon...

[Q18] How to downgrade a package in debian?
[Ans] Suppose you have a package from testing or unstable, and you want to go back to a package from stable, you can accomplish this by setting you preferences file. Edit /etc/apt/preferences as follows:

    Package: *
    Pin: release a=stable
    Pin-Priority: 1001

and run "apt-get install ", which forces downgrade due to Pin-priority > 1000. You can also downgrade from testing/unstable to stable by just saying "apt-get upgrade". Be warned, there may be some small glitches in dependencies.
