Now Accepting Applications: Community Preservation Grants

Are you working to preserve the history of your New England community? Historic New England’s Community Preservation Grants<https://www.historicnewengland.org/helpful-links/awards-programs/community-preservation-grants/community-preservation-grant-guidelines/> support small to mid-sized organizations across the region that are saving and sharing the stories, places, and traditions that define their communities.

Each year, one grant of $1,250 is awarded to a qualifying 501(c)(3) history or preservation organization in each New England state: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Funded through the Herbert and Louise Whitney Fund for Community Preservation, the program honors the Whitneys’ deep appreciation for New England history—especially their connection to the Bishop family farm in North Woodstock, Connecticut.

At Historic New England, we believe that collaborative partnerships strengthen preservation efforts and amplify the stories of diverse people and places across the region. Community Preservation Grants help advance this mission by investing in inclusive projects that reflect the full breadth of local history.

Eligibility
We invite applications from New England–based nonprofits whose primary mission is historic preservation—whether focused on buildings, landscapes, collections, or community stories. While there is no formal budget threshold, preference will be given to organizations for which a $1,250 grant would meaningfully advance project success.

Funding Priorities
Proposed projects should emphasize inclusive interpretation and community engagement. Grants may be used for project planning, materials, consulting fees, or other direct expenses—but not staff salaries. If applying for seed funding, please include a full project description, timeline, and proposed milestones.
