[MassHistPres] Underground Railroad plaques

Here in Uxbridge, Effingham Capron was a close associate with William Lloyd Garrison and the Unitarian Church hosted a number of Antislavery Society meetings. While Samuel May wrote about assisting fugitive slaves through Connecticut to Uxbridge there is no credible evidence that any particular building was associated with those actions. That lack of documentation caused us difficulty when we sought certification by the NPS as a node in the underground railroad.

Subject: [MassHistPres] Underground Railroad plaques

In Acton, we have a number of houses that were part of the underground railroad and we would like to offer the owners an opportunity to recognize the structure and occupants. We are thinking of a plaque that can be fixed to the house similar to what we offer CRL listings to celebrate the house's age or original occupants.

Do any of the communities have a project like this? We are looking for any precedents, verbiage, or graphics that may be appropriate to our endeavor.

Thank you for any assistance.
