I am currently a Ph.D. candidate of Department of Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts, Boston (UMB). My researches mainly focus on security and privacy solutions for applications relating to big-data and IoT/Smart home systems. I work under supervision of Professor Xiaohui Liang who directs the Mobile Computing and Privacy (MobCP) Lab . I received my B.S. from the VNU University of Engineering and Technology(Vietnam) in 2001, and my MSc. from Ho Chi Minh National University in 2010, both in Computer Science. Before joining UMass Boston in 2019, I had worked as a lecturer for the University of Transport and Communications (Vietnam) for fifteen and a half years.

  • June. 18th, 2023 - One paper summited to the 20th International Conference on Privacy, Security & Trust (PST2023) has been accepted. Benz will present this idea of research in August 2023.
  • June. 8th, 2023 - Our submission (2 pages of abstract + a poster) to the 19th Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security (SOUPS 2023) has been accepted. Benz will present this idea of research in August 2023.
  • May. 25th, 2023- Benz submitted 2 pages of abstract + a poster "Voice Privacy Assistant for Monitoring In-home Voice Commands" to the 19th Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security (SOUPS 2023).
  • May. 19th, 2023- One regular paper (10 pages) "VPASS: Voice Privacy Assistant System for Monitoring In-home Voice Commands" is submitted to the 20th International Conference on Privacy, Security & Trust (PST2023).
  • April. 27th, 2023- Benz asks CS Department to hire Ms. Muskaan Manocha for a grader position of his class in summer 2023
  • April. 20th, 2023- Benz's Ph.D. disseration defending will be on May 22nd, 2023. (Flyer)
  • Mar. 20th, 2023- Benz Tran will present his Ph.D. dissertation proposal to the commitee on April 19th, 2023.
  • Mar. 10th, 2023- Benz Tran teaches CS220/Applied Discrete Mathematics in Summer 2023 at UMB
  • Jan. 18th, 2023- One paper "Exploiting Relevance of Speech to Sleepiness Detection via Attention Mechanism" is accepted in 2023 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC 2023): SAC E-Health Track.
  • January 9th, 2023- Benz Tran will serve as a RA in Spring 2023.
  • November 1st, 2022- One paper "Exploiting Relevance of Speech to Sleepiness Detection via Attention Mechanism" has been submitted to the ICC2023 conference.
  • October 26, 2022- One paper with small contributions from Benz has been submitted to ICASSP2023. Congratulation to Eli Kirtz - the first author of the paper Early Detection of Cognitive Decline using Voice Assistant Commands.
  • August 30, 2022- Benz Tran will serve CS Department of UMB as a TA in Fall 2022.

  • Dec. 13, 2021- Briefing news: Benz Tran will serve as a Teaching Assistant in Spring 2022; Benz Tran's working on papers of speech speech transition(due on 3/21/2022), and speech emotion (due on 28 May 2022).
  • Nov. 10, 2021- Benz Tran was given a 13-inch MacbookPro (image); It's first time ever Bang using macOS. Thank you professor Xiaohui Liang!
  • Oct. 06th, 2021- Benz Tran submitted a paper to ICASSP2022 . This is the first paper Benz Tran incorporating with Sonde Health Inc. Thanks to James W. Showoebel, Lindsay A. Warrenburg, Youxiang Zhu. Specially thanks to my supervisor Prof. Xiaohui Liang.
  • August 15th, 2021- Benz Tran will serve as RA in the semester of Fall 2021.
  • June 15th, 2021- Benz Tran is promoted as a Ph.D. Candidate after completing the Qualifying Exam.
  • June 10th, 2021- Our paper - "Exploiting Physical Presence Sensing to Secure Voice Assistant Systems" is selected as one of 15 Best Paper Awards in ICC2021. There are 758 accepted papers out of 1881 submissions spread over 143 technical sessions in ICC2021 (check it out here!).
  • January 25th, 2021- One paper - "Exploiting Physical Presence Sensing to Secure Voice Assistant Systems" has been accepted by IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) 2021
  • January 7th, 2021- One paper - "Exploiting Physical Presence Sensing to Secure Voice Assistant Systems" has been published online at IEEE Peer-to-Peer Networking and Applications.

  • May 26, 2020 Benz finished third semester (Spring 2020) by three courses at A. Current GPA of 3.93. Accumulating 30 credits so far.
  • December 24, 2019 Benz finished second semester (Fall 2019) at UMB by GPA of 3.83. He got a B+ in CS624 and has accumulated 21 credits so far.
  • June 15, 2019 Benz finished his very first semester (Spring 2019) at UMB by GPA 4.0
