Why You Need to Apply
In order to do the work for this course, you will need two things
A Linux account
A course directory
With the Linux account to can connect to any Linux machine on the CS Department network
The course directory is where you will put your work for this course
When you complete the Apply process you will also get a Windows account
Which you can use on any of the Windows machines in the CS Labs
What If You Already Have a Linux Account?
You must complete the Apply process even if you already have a Linux account
If you do not complete the process you will
not
get a course directory
Which you need to submit assignments
To get a course directory go to
https://portal.cs.umb.edu/accounts/login/
and login
You will then see a list of all CS and IT courses that have class directories
Select the correct section by clicking on the check box
Then click Submit
Your class directory will normally be created by the next day
Creating a Linux Account
Do not create a new Linux account if you already have one
To create a Linux account go to
https://portal.cs.umb.edu/register/
When you do, you should see a page that looks like this
The Username Field
The first box is for your username
A username must be no more than 8 characters
And must start with a letter
The username must be
lower case
Do not use capitals
My username is "ghoffman"
Which consists of the first letter in my first name
Followed by my last name
The UMB Email Field
Only UMB students should have a Linux account
To enforce this rule we ask for your UMB email address
The Password Field
A password must
Have between 10 and 16 characters
Have at least 2 uppercase letters
Have at least 2 lowercase letters
Have at least 2 digits (0-9)
Have at least 2 special symbols (!$%#^@&*_+ etc.)
After You Click the Join Button
When you have filled in all required fields click the Join button
An email will automatically be sent to your UMB email address
If you don't see the the email, check your spam folder
You must open this email message and click on the link provided
This will brought back to Apply, where you see a message
Your account is now activated
This means a Linux account will be created for you
Usually this happens by the next day
Now click on the Login link on the left hand side of the screen
After you login, you will see a list of courses and sections
Select the sections in which you are registered
And click Submit
When are the Account and the Directory Created?
There is a delay between the time when you chose your courses
And when your course directories are created
Certain things have to be checked before proceeding
And then a script is run
Usually this script is run in the evening
An email will be sent to your UMB account
When the Linux account and directories have been created
Windows Accounts
You need a separate account to use the CS Department Windows machines
The Apply process will create this Windows account for you
With the same username
This account will at first have the default password "abcd_1234"
When you first connect with this account
You will be asked to change your password
It's a good idea to make your Windows password the same as your Linux password
