Common buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica)
branches and leaf scars opposite, thorn-tipped, withered black berries may be present by leaf scars. Look for dead leaves that are toothed with upcurved veins. Note that trees in the Rosaceae, like crabapples, may also have thorn-tipped branches, but their branches and leaf scars are alternate
