"Linguistics" (APLING 601): provides an introduction to the study of language with a special emphasis on how English differs from other languages.

Past Courses

"The Structure of the English Language" (APLING 629): describes the syntactic structure of English in detail and discusses how English grammar can be most effectively taught to individuals learning English as a second/foreign language.

"Phonetics and Phonemics" (APLING 627): focuses on the sound systems of English and other languages and discusses ways to teach pronunciation to students learning to speak English as a second/foreign language.

"History of the English Language" (English 440): surveys the development of the English language from Old English to the present.
