At a meeting of the Boston Society of Architects Historic Resources
Committee last week, representatives of AIA Massachusetts invited
preservationists to get involved with their efforts to pass legislation, "An
Act relative to historic districts and commissions," HD.4331 and a similar
bill, S.1428.

Recently, a few historical commission leaders wrote to this listserv about
their frustrations with the limited powers of HDCs.

However, the proposed bill is not a solution, rather it does things no one
is asking for, like substituting a state demolition delay law for home
rule-based laws, and adding demo delay to historic districts, where now
demolition is not allowed. The bill came up on the listserve last June, and
many listserv members raised concerns about it.

There will be a "conversation" about the legislation this Friday, March 27,
at 12:00 p.m., hosted by Massachusetts History Alliance. It is on Zoom, open
to the public https://masshistorycommons.org/public-square/conversations/

Maybe folks would like to weigh in on what HDCs really need, if 40 8d is
revised, and what they don't need.
