Technical Projects

Systems Monitoring: Chimera Project · UMass Boston

2024 – 2025
  • Built and configured Grafana dashboards to visualize live system metrics from a remote Linux server, giving the team real-time visibility instead of guesswork.
  • Worked entirely over SSH in a remote Linux environment, using command-line tools to monitor system state and troubleshoot issues.
  • Researched how system and configuration settings get left exposed and where real vulnerabilities sit, documenting findings in a semester-long research paper.

Watchdog Timer: C & x86 Assembly · UMass Boston

2024
  • Built a watchdog timer that detects when a system hangs or misbehaves and automatically resets it, a core reliability concept.
  • Optimized performance-critical sections of C with x86 assembly, working close to the hardware on an embedded target.

Compiler Internals: j-- (Java) · UMass Boston

2026
  • Worked inside an existing compiler codebase (j--, a subset of Java), implementing additional language features across the lexing, parsing, and code-generation stages.
  • Navigated and extended an unfamiliar codebase to understand how each stage of a compiler fits together.

Reddit Mental Health Classifier: Python · UMass Boston

2024
  • Built a text classifier in Python with scikit-learn and NLTK, owning the full preprocessing pipeline: cleaning real Reddit data, stripping URLs and stopwords, and lemmatizing text.
  • Tuned model parameters to ~75% accuracy and connected it to a web front end for live predictions.

Personal Portfolio Website · cs.umb.edu/~dtle21

2026
  • Built, customized, and deployed a personal portfolio site to the UMass Boston CS server, pushing builds and updates over SSH and the command line.
